A threat against city hawkers by rogue kanjoo who mete out violence on them has been nipped in the bud.

Suspects were arrested after Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko received a tip-off from members of the public that a group of city-county askaris were robbing innocent people.

He went on patrol within the affected areas and witnessed the alleged robbery first hand and called in the Flying Squad.

Seven of these suspects have been charged with robbery with violence!

Philemon Cheburet Kimei, Peter Ndungu Gitau and Bernard Maina Kogi were charged with robbing Cyrus Ndumia Maingi of Ksh600  on  October 29 2017 along Forest Lane in Ngara within Nairobi County, while armed with knives and an axe.

Second charge

The second charge stated that John Ndukuyu Muchoki, Maurice Kisoi Mwonga, David Ndome Mwangi, Wabwoba Maruti allegedly robbed along 5th Street Eastleigh in Nairobi County jointly with others not in court.

The police say they were armed with court being armed with pangas, rungus and metal bars when they accosted their target and relieved him of Ksh150. and vests costing Ksh20,000.

They are also accused of stealing 14 pairs of bed sheets valued at Ksh5,600 from Jeremiah Wambugu Njoki.

John Ndukuyu Muchoki, Maurice Kisoi Mwonga, David Ndome Mwangi, Wabwoba Maruti who were charged with five other criminal charges were released on a cash bail of  Sh100,000.

The hearing of their case is slated for November 29 2017.

Late last year, the governor while senator fought a relentless war against errant askaris who accosted and stabbed a hawker to death in the city centre.

Sonko who unseated Dr. Evans Kidero has vowed to bring order and sanity in the streets of Nairobi.
