A Nairobi based police officer has been charged with negligence after he lost his service firearm.
Sergeant Michael Okonya,54, allegedly left the pistol in a toilet and upon rushing back, the dirty hand of the enemy had run off with it.
He denied a charge of losing by neglect a firearm contrary to Section 92(2) of the National Police service Act.
The charge stated on January 3 2018 at New Nairobi Area county police headquarters of ‘B’ branch section in Nairobi Upper Hill, Nairobi county.
The Jericho pistol was loaded with 15 bullets, the court heard.
Okonya faced a further charge of losing 15 bullets by neglect that had been entrusted to him in the course of his duty.
He begged for mercy through his lawyer who told a magistrate that “the firearm has since been recovered.”
Okoya has been released on a personal bond of Ksh500,000 and ordered to appear for a hearing of the case on February 12 2018.
The case will be mentioned on January 19 2018
